The GT died around 2011 when Martindale made it impossible to access the forums, although that in and of itself came from the fact that he tried to install a moderator who never fought and had no idea how the community functioned. I think the entire site went down around 2014/2015. A few people tried to pull the GT name and keep running it (some guys in a group that involved Ran and several others, and then a year later Circ tried, all around 2011/2012/2013).
As far as I'm concerned, the Hall of Records going down and the GT falling apart isn't really much of a loss. The tournament was run like shit under Martindale; it was an interesting attempt at drawing together players from across several communities, but it never really came together properly. Martindale never seemed interesting in making the format work, and I don't think any of the subsequent attempts by Ran's group or by Circ were really successful, either. They just sort of crumbled.
There's fighting in other communities and on other forums, but the GT is definitely dead in the water. I don't think Martindale has any intent of reviving it.The Battle Arena on his main site, RoleplayGateway, hasn't had much activity either.
EDIT:: Color me corrected, I checked Gateway and apparently he is planning to do it at some point.

Another GT League would be interesting, especially if there's a lot of new fighters I've never fought before. As far as Martindale is concerned, he never really understood what it meant to be a fighter. Yes, I know he participates in MMA (or used to), but he always seemed to miss the point of what we were doing here. I'm not sure if I could ever get back in the ring again, but a well-run tournament with new blood might be interesting enough to make it happen.

There's plenty of fighting groups and communities around, the only problem is finding them and knowing what kind of trends exist in their community.
Martindale's issue was less that he didn't understand fighting, and more that he didn't really understand how to run a tournament. His approach was too laissez-faire and he never laid down strict enough guidelines. When you have a fighting event with thirty, sixty, or more people (admittedly, both "official GTs" saw an enormous turn-over rate as people dropped out in waves) from a multitude of communities, you have to lay some firm groundwork. Here's what I'm trying to do, here's how I'm going to do it. You may alienate some people who aren't into whatever your specific approach is, but nothing stops anyone from running a tournament with a different framework that appeals to other playstyles.
Martindale wanted to have his cake and eat it too, but it doesn't work that way when you're running tournaments with a significant number of people. You can't just throw it out into a free-fall and hope it works.

There were way too many instances of corrupt judging going on there.

Speaking of the Grand Tournament, did you participate in the TB division, Nonpareil? I believe Circ won but I could be mistaken.

I didn't. I believe I fought Circ after he won the tournament. I think my rationale was that Martindale would run a crappy tournament and immediately beating his victor would be even more satisfying.
