I'd like to preface this with the fact that I could write about a million words about the struggles MG and I went through over the years. I don't know what the history books will write, or if they'll ever even care. I don't know if anyone will ever truly be able to capture the atmosphere that the fighting world we created back then had or if it will ever be like that again. I just know that it was amazing and no matter how nerdy, stupid, or ridiculous this stuff is I will always remember it.
That said I think the "defining" fight of my "career" would have to be something that happened long before we made the transition to digi chats, myspace and all these funky new places. For a little bit of perspective you have to understand that I came from a dbz chat that only had AA. When I first got to Sailormoonshrine11 MG was already practically a god there and he has his followers (which I actually did go an beat up when I arrived). Without going off too much on a tangent, I trained pretty hard after MG beat me the first time -- I lost to a lot of people. I never turned down a fight and I was not great. What I did have was perseverance. I was pretty much the laughing stock of charmander31 and other chats. I still remember telling MG that I would eventually beat him and become the best.
I was sick one day. I stayed home from school, and being the good friend that Alex was (and we had become great friends at this point) he took the day off, too, and we decided that we would train.
At this point in time I think it was pretty widely known that I had ridiculous speed but I didn't really know how to harness it and I was pretty unfocused. I still couldn't beat most of the top guys, but I knew at times that they were afraid of me (yes, we took this stuff seriously back in the day) from reactions at times from my attacks and showing offs.
Anyway, after a bit of back and forth sparring and some breaks I challenged Alex to a fight to 10 instead of the normal 5. He went up early on me as always with his trickery, baiting out my attacks, dodging, countering and such. I don't really know what happened, maybe because there was no one watching, but it was like something clicked. I started anticipating what he was doing, I started using his own tricks against him, and finally I just started blitzing but without getting nervous. Near the end it was tied 9 - 9 and we were both hesitant. I knew that he was still a bit more wily than I was...so I baited him out. I attacked, waited for the dodge I knew was coming, and then waited for him to attack. Instead of dodging I also typed in an attack and put confidence in myself that I could beat him to the punch...it felt like time was stopped when I was typing out that connection. I did it though; I won. I hit him first, and it was like all that pressure and nervous energy just shattered.
After that moment I didn't really have much of a problem with being nervous anymore. I went on to beat pretty much everyone and build an internet "legend" with Alex. The rest is pretty much history.
It's too bad things change.
Cheers.
